BLOOD IS THE LIFE
Ryan is a huge horror film fan, a subject he will happily chat about for hours, so it’s fitting that his most recent work takes inspiration from the genre. It explores the relationship between romance and death, examining how attraction and mortality can become closely intertwined.
‘Blood is the Life’ takes more direct inspiration from Bram Stoker’s 1897 novel Dracula and the 1992 Francis Ford Coppola movie adaptation that still stands, in his opinion, as the most accurate take on the original text. He was particularly interested in the way gothic narratives present love as something that exists alongside danger, transformation, and loss. These ideas encouraged him to confront his own response to themes such as blood and death, not only as sources of fear but also as symbols that carry emotional and psychological meaning.
